Compaq Contura Aero - the chipsets
The Aero's motherboard and the chips
further informations about the chips
- the CPU
Yes, the Aero is INTEL-inside and the CPUs are SX so they should
be upgradable. In fact nobody has done this up to now
(only at the 1st of April 1997 :-)). Some companies
offer this kind of upgrade for the Aero, but I do not think they have
done it yet.
- the 4MB RAM on the motherboard
The 8 RAM chips are all 1Mx4bit, for example of the type
KM44C1000CLJ-t or HM514260ALJ7.
- the video chip and its RAM
The video RAM is always 256k x 16bit = 512kB,
the chip can be a MT4C16257DJ-7L, a TC514260BJL-80 or a HM514260ALJ7
for example.
For further information on this chips please take a look at my
video page.
- the PCMCIA controller
According to the Linux FAQ for the Aero, one of the VLSI chips is the
PCMCIA controller and it is a clone of the Intel 82365 chip. It should be
the 82C146.
- the BIOS
The flash-BIOS is 8 x 128kb = 1MBit. Sometimes this chip is placed in a PLCC-socket
- all the other chips
Sorry, at the moment there is no information available on the other chips.
Feel free to find out more.
